Mock Caldecott Panel

Dr. Mary Rycik's children's literature classes participated in a Mock Caldecott Award session Tuesday, January 17, 2012. Criteria and terms followed were those used by the Association for Library Services for Children, American Library Association Medal committee.

Titles selected for review mix well known illustrators with artists new to the field of picture books illustration. A variety of art mediums are represented including collage, painted oils, pencil, watercolors, ink, acrylics, and mixed media. Each book considered was a recent addition to the library's juvenile collection (November 2011 - January 2012).

Students considered eighteen (18) picture books and narrowed the original field five semi-finalists and then  voted for a winner and honor book:

And our winner is:

And our honor book winner is ...

Neville, illustrated by G. Brian Karas

A complete list of picture books considered by Dr. Rycik's class, links to more information about each picture book's illustrator, and resources for the Caldecott Award, is featured on the IRC web site's Mock Caldecott Panel page

The Association for Library Services for Children's Book and Media Award winners will be announced from the ALA mid-winter meetings in Dallas, TX, on Monday, January 23, 2012.

Teacher's Choice 2011

Since 1989, the Teachers’ Choices project has developed an annual annotated reading list of new books that will encourage young people to read. These are books that kids will enjoy—and that contribute to learning across the curriculum. -- Teacher's Choice Reading List

The following books, a selection of 2011 Teacher's Choice titles, have been recently added to the juvenile circulating collection. These books are part of a selection of resources currently on reserve for Dr. Rycik's Tradebooks and Technology class. A number of titles selected as Teacher's Choice winners are already part of the library juvenile collection.

Teacher's Choices are announced each November by the International Reading Association. The award is co-sponsored by the Children's Book Council. For more information about choosing the Teacher's Choices, a Fact Sheet is available. A complete listing of the 2011 Teacher's Choice award books and an archive of previous years may be found on the IRA web site.

Children's Choice 2011

"A reading list with a twist! Children themselves evaluate the books and write reviews of their favorites. Since 1974, Children’s Choices have been a trusted source of book recommendations used by teachers, librarians, parents—and children themselves." -- Children's Choices Reading List
