Library News: Databases

Mental Measurements Yearbook and Tests in Print have been added to Ashland University Library's database collection. A complete listing of library database resources, including links to more information about each selection, may be found on the library's Database Selection page. Please note, authentication is required to access databases from off-campus.

Mental Measurements Yearbook "is Produced by the Buros Institute at the University of Nebraska, provides users with a comprehensive guide to over 2,000 contemporary testing instruments. Designed for an audience ranging from novice test consumers to experienced professionals, the MMY series contains information essential for a complete evaluation of test products within such diverse areas as psychology, education, business, and leadership. First published by Oscar K. Buros, the MMY series allows users to make knowledgeable judgments and informed selection decisions about the increasingly complex world of testing. MMY provides coverage from Volume 9 to the present."

Tests in Print (TIP) "serves as a comprehensive bibliography to all known commercially available tests that are currently in print in the English language. TIP provides vital information to users including test purpose, test publisher, in-print status, price, test acronym, intended test population, administration times, publication date(s), and test author(s). TIP is produced by the Buros Institute of Mental Measurements at the University of Nebraska."

Need to print in color? All computers on the second floor may access the color printer. Remember, any print job, processed through the color printer is 10¢.

Color printing is not available when the IRC is closed.

2008 ALSC Awards

The 2008 ALSC, Association for Library Services for Children, awards were announced at the ALA Midwinter Meetings, January 14, 2008. Noted children's award winners, the Randolph Caldecott Medal and the John Newbery Medal, are posted below. 2008 Alex Awards

The 2008 Alex Awards were announced Monday, January 14th, at the ALA Midwinter Meetings in Philadelphia. These awards are sponsored by Booklist.

"The Alex Awards were created to recognize that many teens enjoy and often prefer books written for adults, and to assist librarians in recommending adult books that appeal to teens. The award is named in honor of the late Margaret Alexander Edwards, fondly called ìAlexî by her closest friends, a young adult specialist at the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore. She used adult books extensively with young adults to broaden their experience and enrich their understanding of themselves and their world." - YALSA, Alex Awards

2008 Top Ten Best Books for Young Adults

The 2008 Best Books for Young Adults list was unveiled on Monday, January 14th, at the ALA Midwinter Meetings in Philadelphia. The list, which includes eighty-five titles, is "recommended for those ages 12-18, meet the criteria of both good quality literature and appealing reading for teens. The list comprises a wide range of genres and styles, including contemporary realistic fiction that reflects the diversity of the teen experience, nonfiction that brings to teens an awareness of the world they live in and its history, and fantastical stories told in both narrative and graphic formats" (YALSA, Best Books for YA).

A 2008 Top Ten Best Books for Young Adults list was developed by the committee and includes:

IRC Printing


To facilitate students wishing to work on the second floor when the IRC is closed, the regular IRC printer has been moved from inside the IRC and placed next to the venda card copy machine. Student workers leaving at 11 pm will fill this printer with paper and additional paper is, as always, located in the cabinet beneath the copy machine.

The color printer will be unavailable to students during the new library extended hours. We recommend anyone wishing to print color when the IRC is closed use the color printer in Patterson.

New Library Hours

Beginning Monday, January 14th, changes in library hours of operation will take effect; due to the popularity of later hours during end of term and finals week, these changes include offering extended hours until Midnight most weekdays!

The new hours are posted below:
  • Monday through Thursday: 7:45 am to Midnight
  • Friday: 7:45 am to 6:00 pm
  • Saturday: 10:00 am to 5:00 pm (no change)
  • Sunday: 1:00 pm to Midnight
The Instructional Resource Center hours of operation remain unchanged. However, the second floor (outside the IRC) will remain available for students to between 11 pm and midnight .

Reference assistance will be available until 9:00 pm Sunday through Thursday, and 5:00 pm on Friday and Saturday.

Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction

Roger Sutton, editor of Horn Book Magazine and author of the Horn Book Blog "Read Roger," posted the winner of the 2008 Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction; Elijah of Buxton by Christopher Paul Curtis. His post read in part:

"With comedy and anguish, Curtis tells the gripping story in the voice of smart, funny Elijah, 10, the first child born free in the Buxton Settlement established for escaped slaves in Ontario, Canada, over the border from Detroit. Elijah loses his innocence when he crosses the border on a dangerous mission to the U. S. and encounters the horrifying cruelty his parents have escaped from. Curtis now lives near the Buxton Settlement, and, based on his careful research, he tells of ordinary people who are heroes." - Roger Sutton, Read Roger, 1/08/08.
