2008 Alex Awards

The 2008 Alex Awards were announced Monday, January 14th, at the ALA Midwinter Meetings in Philadelphia. These awards are sponsored by Booklist.

"The Alex Awards were created to recognize that many teens enjoy and often prefer books written for adults, and to assist librarians in recommending adult books that appeal to teens. The award is named in honor of the late Margaret Alexander Edwards, fondly called ìAlexî by her closest friends, a young adult specialist at the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore. She used adult books extensively with young adults to broaden their experience and enrich their understanding of themselves and their world." - YALSA, Alex Awards

The awards list follows:

  • American Shaolin: Flying Kicks, Buddhist Monks, and the Legend of Iron Crotch: An Odyssey in the New China, by Matthew Polly
  • Bad Monkeys, by Matt Ruff
  • Essex County Volume 1: Tales from the Farm, by Jeff Lemire
  • Genghis: Birth of an Empire, by Conn Iggulden
  • The God of Animals, by Aryn Kyle
  • A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, by Ishmael Beah

  • Mister Pip, by Lloyd Jones
  • The Name of the Wind, by Patrick Rothfuss

Alex award titles may be found in several locations; AU Juvenile, AU Recreational, and AU Circulating. Be sure to check verify location from the catalog record.

2008 Top Ten Best Books for Young Adults

The 2008 Best Books for Young Adults list was unveiled on Monday, January 14th, at the ALA Midwinter Meetings in Philadelphia. The list, which includes eighty-five titles, is "recommended for those ages 12-18, meet the criteria of both good quality literature and appealing reading for teens. The list comprises a wide range of genres and styles, including contemporary realistic fiction that reflects the diversity of the teen experience, nonfiction that brings to teens an awareness of the world they live in and its history, and fantastical stories told in both narrative and graphic formats" (YALSA, Best Books for YA).

A 2008 Top Ten Best Books for Young Adults list was developed by the committee and includes:

Teen Read Week

From YALSA, Young Adult Library Services Association, the results of the 2007 Teens' Top Ten vote from Teen Read Week, October 14 - 20 - 2007.

"Teens' Top Ten is a "teen choice" list, where teens nominate and choose their favorite books of the previous year! Nominators are members of teen book groups in five school and public libraries around the country—the 2007 nominees were chosen by book groups in Connecticut, Kansas, New Jersey, New Hampshire, and Utah, selected for their experience in discussing books." YALSA Quick Picks for Reluctant YA Readers

The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) has announced the 2006 list, selected a the ALA Midwinter meetings in San Antonio last month, recommended for reluctant readers. What are reluctant readers? According to the press release:
"The list is geared to the teenager who, for whatever reason, does not like to read. The list is not intended for teenagers with reading disabilities, though some of the selected titles may be appropriate for those teens. Teen input is a vital aspect in the final decision of the committee. Committee members spend countless hours reading, selecting books to nominate, and working one-on-one with reluctant readers to gauge their interest in the books."
