COE Sponsors Harry Potter Night

"A Harry Potter Book Night Celebration for children in grades 2 through 4 will be held on Feb. 19 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in Ashland University’s Ronk Lecture Hall in the Dwight Schar College of Education Building.

This national Potter event is sponsored by AU’s College of Education early childhood teacher education program and run by student volunteers. Free fun activities related to the Harry Potter book series will be conducted. To add to the ambiance of the event, the dress code for the event is wizarding robes or other character outfits.

Upon arrival, children will be sorted into “houses,” so reservations are essential. Those wanting to attend should contact Lisa Kilper, captain of the AU Quidditch Team, at quidditch at ashland.edu." - - originally posted, MyAU, 2/2/15

Juvenile Books: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Two copies of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows have been added to the library's juvenile circulating collection. To facilitate wider access to the titles, they are both currently located with AU Reserve Books and have a one-week circulation period. At the end of August, one copy will be removed from reserved and placed in the regular juvenile collection.

Reviews from various journals, such as Horn Book Magazine and Publisher's weekly, are pending due to the publisher embargo. However, there were two book reviews published late last week by the New York Times and the Baltimore Sun:

As early as Saturday morning other newspapers, blogs, and news shows were posting their reviews and comments on Harry Potter as well.

What about Ohio libraries? In addition to AU's two copies, the OhioLINK catalog details 6 OhioLINK libraries have copies of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, with two of those six libraries being the Cuyahoga County Public Library System and the Westerville Public Library.

All of the copies were checked out.

To put this into perspective, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer the Cuyahoga County Public Library ordered 845 copies of the book and already had 1000 requests and the Cleveland Public Library system "has more than 1,000 copies of the "Deathly Hallows" on reserve.

Horn Book has posted it's review of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows. As noted by Roger Sutton in the Horn Book Blog, this review will be included in the October/November issue of Horn Book Magazine.

Likely Stories, Book List's blog, has linked to Booklists online review of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows. No specifics are in place regarding it's publication date for the journal, but the reviewer has given the book a starred review.

Cover Art: Harry Potter

Scholastic released the cover art for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows yesterday. As with the previous U.S. editions of the Harry Potter novels, cover art was created by illustrator Mary GrandPré. Details from the Schoolastic press release include the following:
“The front cover of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows features a dramatic sky of oranges and golds. It depicts 17-year-old Harry with arm outstretched, reaching upward. The structures around Harry show evident destruction and in the shadows behind him, we see outlines of other people,” said David Saylor, Scholastic’s Vice President and Creative Director who has designed all seven Harry Potter covers.

“For the first time the cover is a wrap-around. On the back cover spidery hands are outstretched towards Harry. Only when the book is opened does one see a powerful image of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, his glowing red eyes peering out from his hood” (Scholastic, 3/28/07).

Copies of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows have been ordered for the library. As with the other titles in this series, one copy will be on general reserve and a second copy in the regular circulating collection.

Juvenile Books: Harry Potter Collection

The following books have been added to the juvenile collection. A second copy of the Harry Potter series, they will be part of the general reserves collection and available at the reserves desk. Another copy of each title has been removed from reserves and placed back in the juvenile collection.

Harry Potter Series

J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series of books are now located in the library reserves area, main floor of the library. These titles will circulate for one week and have the option for a renewal.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

It's here! Book six in the Harry Potters series has arrived:

The newest title has been shelved with juvenile new books. All others are located in the juvenile collection on the library second floor.
