News • Library Databases

Archer Library Database Access

Archer Library is excited to announce that access to online library collections, such as databases, eBooks, articles, and journals, will utilize Microsoft SSO (single sign on) for off-campus authentication. We are also changing our proxy server host to provide secure access to these resources. These changes will take place on Tuesday, December 17th.

What does this mean?

If you have library databases, journals, eBooks, or article links bookmarked for personal use, or added to courses on Blackboard, they will need to be updated with the new proxy URL. We recommend using Archer Library's A-Z Database List as a starting point to access resources and update permalinks that require authentication.
  • If you have questions, our Course Content • Can I Use this? guide will be updated to address these changes and reflect use of library resources in your online course.
  • In-person help at the start of the spring term will be available on Thursday, January 2 and Friday, January 3, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the active learning lab, Archer Library main floor. If you have questions, stop in for help.

BBW 2024 • Book Ban Data

ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom compiles yearly information related to book challenges and bans. Data from 2023 reveals:

"The number of titles targeted for censorship surged 65 percent in 2023 compared to 2022, reaching the highest levels ever documented by the American Library Association (ALA). The new numbers released today show efforts to censor 4,240 unique book titles* in schools and libraries. This tops the previous high from 2022, when 2,571 unique titles were targeted for censorship" (ALA Report, 2024).

Censorship by the Numbers • 2023

    Censorship by the Numbers
"ALA compiles data on book challenges from reports filed with its Office for Intellectual Freedom by library professionals in the field and from news stories published throughout the United States. Because many book challenges are not reported to the ALA or covered by the press, the 2023 data compiled by ALA represents only a snapshot of book censorship throughout the year. A challenge to a book may be resolved in favor of retaining the book in the collection, or it can result in a book being restricted or withdrawn from the library" (ALA, Censorship by the Numbers).

    Banned Books Week 2024

    Banned Books Week

"Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community –- librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types –- in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular" (ALA, Banned Books Week, 2024).

    History of Banned Books Week
"Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in libraries, bookstores, and schools. By focusing on efforts to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship" (ALA, Banned Books Week, 2024).
