New blog options

Wednesday, January 24th, the IRC blog template migrated to the new Beta version of Blogger. While the information provided within individual blog posts remains unchanged, several different organizational features are now available that make using the blog more convenient.

Category labels have been added to the bottom of each post that correspond to content within the post. A blog sidebar lists Blog Categories and will allow users to click on a particular topic to view all posts with the same labels. If you are looking for juvenile book posts, of which there are currently 28, click on the juvenile book link. At this time, all posts from October 18, 2006 and forward have been labeled. Older posts will be updated as time permits. Additionally, some postings have tags and labels. The tags are technorati tags and are being used by bloggers to help categorize and label blogs in general. Clicking on a tag will take you to technorati and other blogs using the same tag will be visible.

Two book blog widgets from Library Thing have been added to the sidebar. These widgets, IRC Book Review Blog and New IRC Reference, feature new additions to the juvenile collection recently reviewed and new additions to the IRC reference collection. For more information on individual titles, search the catalog from the blog (another sidebar option), or follow the links provided to the library catalog.

Remember, site feeds are available on all of the IRC blogs. Use them and the latest news and information will be delivered immediately to the reader of your choice. I hope you enjoy the recent blog additions.

Konigsburg, Bernard Waber, Laruent de Brunhoff, Marc Simont, Lloyd Alexander, Robert Lipsyte, Jean Fritz, and Mildred D. Taylor, as well as classic book lists detailing fifteen favorite books for preschool through high school readers.

2007 Caldecott Award

Flotsam, by David Wiesner, won the 2007 Caldecott Award for the "most distinguished American picture book for children".

" 'Flotsam is a cinematic unfolding of discovery. A vintage camera washed up on the beach provides a young boy with a surprising view of fantastical images from the bottom of the sea. From fish-eye to lens-eye, readers see a frame-by frame narrative of lush marinescapes ebbing and flowing from the real to the surreal.' "

" 'Telling tales through imagery is what storytellers have done through the ages. Wiesner’s wordless tale resonates with visual images that tell his story with clever wit and lively humor,” said Caldecott Medal Committee Chair Janice Del Negro" (
ALA Caldecot Medal, 1/22/07).

Wiesner has won Caldecott award for two other picture books; Tuesday (1992) and The Three Pigs (2002).

Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction

Roger Sutton, editor of Horn Book Magazine and author of the Horn Book Blog "Read Roger," posted the winner of this year's Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction last Friday afternoon. His post read in part:

"The Green Glass Sea by Ellen Klages (Viking) is the winner of the 2007 Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction. The award is presented to a children's or young adult book published in English by a U.S. publisher and set in the Americas. A standing committee (Ann Carlson; Hazel Rochman, chair; and Roger Sutton) selects the winner. Established by the late historical fiction writer, Scott O'Dell, the award is administered by his wife, Elizabeth Hall. The author is presented with a $5000 prize." (Read Roger, 1/12/07)

The Green Glass Sea (PZ7.K6768 Gr 2006) is part of the library's juvenile collection and professional reviews of the title, including Booklist, Horn Book, School Library Journal, Publisher's Weekly, and Kirkus Reviews, may be found in the library database Academic Search Premier.

The Cat in the Hat Turns 50!

It's the Cat in the Hat's birthday! The following is an article excerpt from the Children's Bookshelf, a Publishers Weekly email newsletter:

"With a loud "BUMP!" that made two very bored siblings jump, the irrepressible Cat in the Hat arrived on the children's book scene a half-century ago, revolutionizing the concept of the beginning reader and sounding the death knell to the stilted Dick and Jane primers. Widely credited with hooking a new generation (as well as subsequent ones) on reading, Dr. Seuss's The Cat in the Hat has sold more than 10.5 million copies in its classic edition alone (not including massive book club sales). In an even more impressive tally, Dr. Seuss's books have been published in more than 20 languages, with over 250 million copies sold worldwide." (Sally Lodge, Children's Bookshelf, 1/11/07)

A special web site, Happy Birthday Cat in the Hat, has been launched to commemorate and celebrate the event. Various activities are available for teachers, librarians, and kids, including printable worksheets and a way to send birthday wishes to the Cat!
