New authors & first novels

The most recent volume of Booklist (v. 104, no. 6) magazine, is a spotlight issue featuring first novels:

"During the last few years, there's been an enormous increase in the number of first novels for children and young adults. Below you'll find the best of this year's debuts - all published over the last 12 months. It's no stretch to think we'll be hearing more from these talented writers." - Stephanie Zvirin (Booklist, 11/15/07, p. 55)

Nine of then ten books detailed are part of the library juvenile collection. Books titles link to the library catalog; check out a new author and view availability:
  1. Billie Standish Was Here, by Nancy Crocker

It's here! The new laminator

The new laminator, a GBC HeatSeal Ultima 65, has arrived in the IRC and is ready for use. Similar to the laminators in several neighboring school districts, this machine not only has several safety features in place, but also offers a quieter laminating process.

Process differs slightly in that lighter weight items (copy paper and construction paper) should be fed through more quickly than heavier items (file folders and poster board). Please ask for help when using this machine for the first time.

Leveled Book Kits

Dr. Mary Rycik's class has recently leveled the following five book kits in the IRC Collection:
From the IRC web page:

"Each leveled kit has a label placed on the bottom right corner indicating suggested reading levels; included are grade and stage (emergent, early, early fluent, and fluent), F & P (Fountas and Pinnell), and Directed Reading Assessment (DRA). A handout is provided with leveled kits and describes criteria."

For more information on IRC book kits, check out the Instructional Resource Center web site, IRC: Leveled Book Kits. As additional book kits are leveled, notices will be posted on the IRC blog.
