New! Ellison Dies

A new alphabet, Tall 'n Thin, has been added to the IRC collection of Ellison Dies. This alphabet, in actuality a set of two alphabets, is a 4 inch die collection including upper and lower case letters, an exclamation point, question mark, and parenthesis. An complimentary set of Tall ‘n Thin numbers, as well as three new image dies, a check mark, candy (2), and shelved books, round out the new Die purchases. The addition of another Ellison Prestige Pro cutting machine, our sixth, completes the recent Ellison acquisition.

New Books: Another Bookcase

A second bookcase for New Books arrived Wednesday morning!

The juvenile collection has a significant number of new titles arriving on a monthly, often weekly, basis. As a result, the bookcase was filled quickly and some new titles removed from this area before they were discovered. A second bookcase will facilitate new titles remaining in the designated new book area for a longer period of time. Don't forget the IRC Book Review Blog for additional information on new titles.

Venda Card Copy Machine

New signs (24 X 36 posters!) have been posted above the Venda Card copier located directly outside the IRC. One details information regarding venda card and copier FAQ's and the second contains instructions regarding the use of the copy machine and a copyright notice. The College of Education provides this copy machine for education students. The Venda Card copier is located in the library to facilitate ease of use.

Card FAQ's:

  • Copy cards are distributed by individual course professors on an as needed basis.
  • Each copy card has 100 copies and must be returned when empty.
  • Students are responsible for their copy cards; note the number of your copy card in case you lose it and it is (a) returned for you, or (b) found in the IRC.
  • Return empty cards to Mrs. Vanderzyden, 231 Dwight Schar College of Education, at the end of each term. If Mrs. Vanderzyden is not in her office, cards may be slipped under the door.
  • There is a $5.00 charge for each card not returned.
  • The IRC does not have copy cards available for purchase.

Copier FAQ's:

  • The Venda card copier is located directly outside of the Instructional Resource Center.
  • The copy machine does NOT have a duplex option.
  • It is possible to make overheads, but transparency sheets must be purchased in the IRC.
  • The copy machine can not make color copies.
  • Additional paper for the copy machine is available in the cabinet underneath the copier.
  • The copy machine does have a hand feed drawer for bypass needs.
  • Only copy paper and transparencies purchased in the IRC may be used in the copy machine.

Venda Card Unit FAQ's:

  • The Venda card unit operates with a five second delay. It may be necessary to reinsert the card during usage.
  • Do not use cards from other Venda card units, or your AU Eagle Card, in this machine.

Copiers in the Library:

  • If you do not have a copy card/Venda card, please do not ask to use the machine and pay for your copies. We are unable to facilitate this request.
  • Coin operated copiers are located on the main floor of the library near the reserves desk and printer.

ERIC Web Site Updates

The Education Resources Information Center, or ERIC, announced a recent update to their web site. Among the listed changes are the following search options:

  • Results sorting options. The default sort is based on relevance. Relevance is determined by the number of search terms found in the record and uniqueness of the term in the database. Preference is given to newer materials and to the presence of either full text in ERIC or of a link to the publisher. Users may also sort results by author, publication date, and journal or institutional source.
  • Search term highlighting. Search terms will appear in yellow in the titles and abstracts returned as results. This feature enables searchers to see at a glance how the results relate to the search.
  • Streamlined records display. Citation information is compactly arrayed, and more records are visible at a glance.

Also note: "Free access to the ERIC Collection, including full text of more than 100,000 items, as well as more than 1.2 million bibliographic citations and abstracts."

Banned Books Week

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Banned Books Week. Scheduled for the week of September 23 through September 30, 2006, Banned Books Week is traditionally a time to reflect on books that have been challenged and/or banned from public, school, and academic libraries. Each year books by Judy Blume, J.K. Rowling, Dav Pilkey, J.D. Salinger, and Robert Cormier, to name a few, top the American Library Association's list of challenged books.

Below are a few resources available in AU Library regarding banned books, challenged books, and censorship. Unless otherwise noted, all of the titles are part of the regular circulating collection:

Banned Book resources from the American Library Association:

An interesting offering from Google, in conjunction with the American Library Association, is a Book Search titled Celebrate Your Freedom to Read:

"Google Book Search is our effort to expand the universe of books you can discover, and this year we're joining libraries and bookstores across the country to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Banned Books Week – a nationwide initiative to help people learn about and explore banned books. You can start by browsing these 42 classics – books we couldn't be more pleased to highlight." - Google Book Search, 9/13/06

Among the 42 titles listed are The Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Lord of the Flies, Brave New World, The Color Purple, Gone with the Wind, and A Separate Peace. Google links users to information about finding these books in a library or book store. Links within this post go to the AU catalog.
